Transformed into Nicholas Demdike, he witnesses the downfall of his rival, Brother Paslew, whose curse on Demdike's descendants leads to the emergence of the "Lancashire Witches." Central to the story is Mother Demdike and her coven as they attempt to corrupt the innocent Alizon Devi, culminating in a battle between good and evil that determines Alizon's fate.
