Set on Christmas Eve, the narrative follows Prince Gregor and the brave Winfried of England as they traverse perilous terrain to reach a forest-dwelling heathen tribe. Upon arrival, Winfried confronts an unspeakable evil, dismantling the great oak tree central to the tribe's false worship. He introduces a young fir tree, representing the "tree of the Christ-child," as a new symbol for the people, embodying joy, music, and love in their rites.
