The plot revolves around Jack Claire, an LSU English professor who inherits a collection of manuscripts and a rare First Folio after a friend's death. Upon discovering the handwriting does not belong to Shakespeare, he embarks on a quest to authenticate the documents. This pursuit attracts the attention of a dangerous collector who sends a mercenary to retrieve the manuscripts by any means necessary, leading to a tense confrontation as Jack fights to protect the literary treasures.
