Set against the backdrop of 1932 during Prohibition and the Great Depression, the story follows Billy McGlory, a young man with dreams of owning a lavish supper club and big band. As he prepares to marry Prudence, he is lured by the dubious Rosario Ingovito, who promises him fame and fortune. Despite Prudence's concerns, Billy becomes increasingly entangled in Rosie's shady dealings, only to realize the peril he faces when it's too late. The narrative explores themes of ambition, the pursuit of dreams, and the consequences of choices made in desperation.
