Joseph Pennell, an influential illustrator and artist, began his career in 1881 with sketches of south Philadelphia. His work includes extensive depictions of American cities and notable sketches from the Panama Canal's construction. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he taught etching at the Arts Students' League in New York, contributed as an art critic for the Brooklyn Eagle, authored several books, and played a key role in the New Society of Sculptors, Painters and Engravers.
