Martha, a London prostitute, fulfills a condemned prisoner's last wish, which unexpectedly makes her the sole heiress to his fortune, provoking the Church's ire. Amidst this turmoil, a prelate becomes addicted to gambling and is murdered, while the Bishop develops an obsession with Martha, who opens a gambling and prostitution house. After a police raid closes her establishment, Martha embarks on a serious relationship, ultimately rejecting the Bishop and deciding to emigrate to America for a fresh start.
