The author, born in Finland in 1914, initially made her mark as a cartoonist before creating the beloved Moomin series, starting with a character she drew for fun in the 1930s. The Moomin books, beginning with The Moomins and the Great Flood in 1945, captivated audiences worldwide and included several sequels. Jansson split her time between Helsinki and a serene island in the Gulf of Finland with her partner, artist Tuulikki Pietil. Her contributions to literature earned her numerous accolades, including the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, before her passing in 2001.
