Set against the backdrop of seventh-century Europe, the story follows two brothers who uncover their noble heritage just as their farmhouse is attacked by a barbarian horde. Separated during their escape, the younger brother seeks the Emperor's aid in Byzantium, only to realize that titles are defended by strength. Meanwhile, the older brother finds refuge with a mountain community, the Cimbrians, as they navigate the dangers posed by the Longobards, who dominate Italy. Their journeys intertwine themes of identity, survival, and the harsh realities of their world.
