Set in 173 A.D. in the Nile region, a young man named Polo embarks on a perilous journey to join the Praetorian Fleet in Rome. Accompanied by a family friend’s letters of recommendation, he faces numerous dangers, including brigands and crocodiles, as well as betrayal from a companion named Antonius Longus, who steals a mysterious list tied to a conspiracy against Rome. Their paths converge in Alexandria, where they must navigate treachery and the pursuit of an agent intent on reclaiming the list.
