More about the book
Inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's short story "To the Wharfs," this composition reflects the mounting anxiety of a French fishing village awaiting the return of their fishermen after a storm. The piece captures the emotional intensity of the villagers' experience, culminating in their collective shout of relief upon sighting the boats. Originally written for the London Sinfonietta to celebrate Oliver Knussen's 50th birthday, it was first performed in 2000 and features a recording by bassoonist Peter Kolkay and violist Maureen Gallagher.
