Freedom's Coming

Focusing on the interplay of race and culture, this work examines the role of religion in the post-Civil War and twentieth-century South. It reveals how southern Protestantism, while reinforcing existing social hierarchies through formal theology, also contained elements of subversion through evangelical practices. The author highlights the passionate individualism and expressive faith of believers, suggesting that these aspects played a crucial role in challenging the status quo and fostering change within southern society.
