Educated at home while studying law at Trinity College, he published his first story at 24. His works, including classics like "The Cock and Anchor" and "In a Glass Darkly," explore psychological terror rather than external horrors. Following personal tragedy, his writing deepened, solidifying his status as a key figure in 19th-century supernatural literature before his death in 1873.
