Set in 1993, the story follows Thomas Penmarsh, who has lived in his seaside home, Finisterre, since childhood. At 48, he grapples with the loss of everything he valued in 1967 and the recent death of his controlling mother, which leaves him in charge of the house. The arrival of his cousin Esmond, a childhood confidant, brings joy, but Thomas soon questions Esmond's true nature, leading to a tension-filled exploration of trust and hidden motives.
