Set in early 18th-century Japan, the story follows Yazama Jiutarô, a young samurai grappling with the loss of his master, who has committed ritual suicide. Now ronin, Jiutarô and his fellow warriors are determined to seek vengeance against the court official responsible for their master's fate. They plan to return for retribution on December 31, 1702, fully aware that their quest for justice will ultimately lead to their own deaths through the same ritual suicide they seek to avenge.
