An Australian novelist, Jessie Catherine Couvreur, known by her pseudonym Tasma, gained recognition in the late 19th century. After traveling to Europe in 1873 and lecturing in French, she received accolades from the French government. Her debut novel, Uncle Piper of Piper's Hill, was serialized in 1888 and published in London in 1889, achieving immediate success. Tasma's life intertwined with European culture following her permanent move in 1883 and her marriage to Belgian politician Auguste Couvreur in 1885.
