Set in the summer of 1945 in New Bonn, Minnesota, the story follows thirteen-year-olds Frank, Jack, and Skeeter as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a Nazi soldier from a nearby POW camp. Their adventure begins when they spot something red on Muskrat Island and discover a warning note signed "Red Rover." As they unravel the mystery, they also follow a treasure map left by Skeeter's late brother, leading to unexpected revelations. Amidst the backdrop of World War II's conclusion, the boys face dangers that challenge their understanding of treasure and friendship.
