The Great Sand Dunes of Southern Colorado, towering at 750 feet, are the tallest dunes in the U.S. not located near an ocean or lake. Designated as a national monument in 1932 and a national park in 2000, these dunes have a rich history, having been utilized by prehistoric hunter-gatherers and the Ute Indian tribe. Zebulon Pike was the first American explorer to document the dunes in 1807, paving the way for future explorers, ranchers, and miners.
