Born in 1871, he began his career as a journalist before publishing his controversial first novel, Sister Carrie, which later gained acclaim as a significant urban narrative. His notable work, An American Tragedy, reflects his observations on societal ambition and crime. Dreiser's political views shifted towards socialism and atheism, leading him to fight against censorship and join the Communist Party USA post-World War II. He passed away in 1945.
