The plot follows Tungee Cahill, who becomes a target for assassination after depositing gold in a San Francisco bank. After being shanghaied onto a ship bound for Liverpool, he faces mutiny and piracy. Teaming up with the skipper, they quell the rebellion and navigate treacherous waters. The ship is later diverted to West Africa for a slave run, where Tungee witnesses mysterious rituals among the captives. As tensions rise with pursuing warships, Tungee's journey leads him back to San Francisco, where he embarks on a quest to reclaim his fortune and finds romance with Laura Du Beck.
