Angel in the house

Set in 1858, the story follows Elizabeth Susanna Browning as she seeks independence from her family in London. Responding to an advertisement, she becomes the housekeeper for the enigmatic American engineer Zerah Colburn. Their whirlwind marriage leads them to New York and then Philadelphia, where financial misfortune strikes. As Lizzy grapples with personal crises and betrayal, she hires a private investigator to uncover her husband's secrets. Ultimately, she must navigate heartbreak and rediscovery, finding solace with a new love from Norway.
