After his time in the West, he took a position as an American consul in Germany in 1878 and never returned to the U.S. He passed away in 1902 and was laid to rest in the churchyard of St. Peter's Church in Frimley, Surrey, England. His legacy endures through his writings, which capture the spirit of the American frontier.
