Set in early 1942, the story follows 14-year-old Johnny Read, known as Tovaira, who is trapped behind Japanese lines in East New Britain. Alongside his friend Tibu, they seek to evade capture. A mishap during a sorcery ritual sends them back to 1914, where they join forces with young skipper Elijah to uncover the mystery of the Australian Submarine AE-1's disappearance. However, their adventure takes a dark turn when they are captured by the nefarious Jurgen Shultz, a Blackbirder, putting their lives in peril.
