The conference in Erice, Sicily, in November 1977 focused on the study of plankton "patchiness," initiated by oceanographers discussing recent findings. A planning group, including prominent scientists from various countries, was formed to organize the event under NATO's Marine Sciences Panel. The Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, known for fostering high-standard scientific dialogue since 1963, hosted the conference, aiming to provide a platform for young researchers to engage with significant contemporary issues in marine science.
