More about the book

The story follows Tavang Sing, the son of a CIA mercenary and a Hmong woman from Laos, who navigates a tumultuous life shaped by his father's capture during the 1960s civil war. After moving to Chicago, he becomes involved with a street gang but is rescued by the reappearance of his father. Tavang transforms his life, graduating from high school and Northwestern University, joining the Peace Corps in Laos, and ultimately earning a law degree from the University of Chicago. He then embarks on a successful career as a lawyer and politician.
