In 1957, a groundbreaking initiative began to provide specialized surgical care to Africa's remote areas, spearheaded by three pioneering plastic surgeons. They utilized light airplanes to deliver reconstructive surgery to those suffering from severe disfigurements due to various causes. Over the years, the service expanded to include public health and emergency medical response, evolving into the largest indigenous health NGO in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Thomas D. Rees, a key figure in this movement, has dedicated his career to advancing plastic surgery and has authored numerous medical texts while actively participating in the Flying Doctors' mission.
