More about the book
The narrative centers on Cashel Byron, a world champion prizefighter who struggles to win the affection of wealthy aristocrat Lydia Carew while concealing his controversial profession. Drawing from Shaw's earlier novel "Cashel Byron's Profession," the short play "The Admirable Bashville" explores themes of social class and personal identity. Shaw's own experiences with social injustices influenced his writing, and this work reflects his keen observations on the disparities between wealth and poverty, as well as the complexities of romantic pursuits.
