Focusing on a garrison town in early 17th-century Muscovy, this work explores the impact of colonization on power dynamics within a southern community. It examines interactions at various levels, including village dynamics, land commune organization, and the relationship between local residents and state-appointed officials. The narrative vividly illustrates how the need for defense against Tatar raids influenced social structures and authority in this frontier settlement.
