Periglacial Preconditioning of Debris Flows in the Southern Alps, New Zealand

Focusing on the environmental conditions in debris flow source areas, this thesis systematically examines factors like slope gradient and debris availability that affect the occurrence of debris flows in high-alpine regions. It highlights the inadequacy of current qualitative assessments and emphasizes the need for a more quantitative understanding of these preconditioning controls to improve debris-flow hazard assessments and evaluate the impacts of climate change.
