Kansas City Southern Railway: Twenty-First Century Planning

Focusing on operational efficiency, this study analyzes the Knoche rail yard in Kansas City and identifies factors affecting cargo delivery timeliness. It highlights the impact of rail congestion on the industry and proposes strategies to enhance efficiency, such as increasing the rip track facility's queue population and directly spotting bad order cars. The findings suggest a potential reduction in daily double handling by switch engines by up to 96%, emphasizing the importance of optimizing processes within rail yards for future growth in the rail industry.
