More about the book

The Adventures of Cotton Top and Earnest is a story about two young boys setting out in the wilderness of the southern regions of Oklahoma during the 1950's. Stanley Paul Smith re-creates a time and place untainted by modern technologies and culture. He takes the reader back to a time sweet and innocent, yet dangerous and adventuresome. The story starts on the Washita River in 1953 and takes the reader through the towns of Sulphur, Mead, Russett, Tishomingo, Lake Texoma and many points in between. There is humor, adventure, thrills and good down home cooking as we meet the characters in the lives of the Smith boys. The author puts plenty of personal family memoirs, Oklahoma history, Indian history, a little romance, and just a touch of embellishment in the mix. Cotton Top and Earnest, two enterprising brothers along with some very interesting friends, take a trip down the Washita on a homemade raft made from a cork outhouse; they encounter gold miners, criminals, an Indian guide, and a mysterious horseman who follows them on the first part of their journey. After capturing two bandits, the boys become local legends. The second part of their journey leads them back home, but not before more adventure turns the two young boys into men. So join us for a raft ride down the Washita River, and hold on tight!!
