When the sisters, Marianna and Laura, find out they are going to Canada with their parents, Laura is worried about Äiti having to leave her precious mandolin behind. There just aren’t enough hands to carry the instrument and the suitcases. Marianna, being younger, is more concerned about getting Äiti to let her take her toy dog with her.In Canada the sisters start to save their nickels in order to buy a typewriter. They feel the stories they make up would sound better if they were typed. But when Äiti becomes ill and is a long time in the hospital, the sisters try to think what would make Äiti really happy.
