Katherine Stewart hopes that a year away from home and university will help her decide what she wants from life and who she really is. In the autumn of 1971, she takes up a post as a teaching assistant in Paris, a city still coming to terms with the aftermath of the failed '68 Revolution. People from every level of Parisian society cross Katherine's path, including migrant workers, students, revolutionaries and artists. Of these Max Kobor, a Hungarian painter in exile, comes to believe that Katherine holds the key to his latest work of art. But will Katherine find the key to her own future?
