This book is the author's 2005 PhD dissertation from the Universtity of Massachusetts at Amherst. The author argues that words can be perceived as foreign even if they are phonologically unmarked, that speech sounds can be perceived as foreign even if they are not particularly common in loanwords, based on speech perception experiments and provides an account for the findings.
