Examines 20th-century commentaries on the doctrine of energies in God as expressed by Barth, Rahner, Florovsky, and Lossky. Diverging from current trends in western theology, offers a positive evaluation of the doctrine. Also finds that both the western identification of the inner and economic trinity and eastern ideas of essence and energies treat the encounter with God as real and see the primary ontological distinction as between God and creation.
