More about the book

The child asks the man, "If the Popular Front won the election, why did the military revolt?" "I don't know, André. I guess they think they can run the government better. Compromise is not an easy word on Spanish lips." Few understand the bloody Spanish Civil War. Even after the war ends, guerilla bands of commoners continue to fight Franco's oppressive fascist regime. André, growing up believing he caused his mother's death, longs to go to Spain, the country of her birth. Hitler's invasion of France postpones his plan. At fifteen, André joins the French underground. At eighteen, betrayed by his brother and stepmother, he disappears from their chateau in the Rhone Valley. Traveling to his beloved Spain, he joins the guerrilleros. Gretchen, growing up in Nazi Germany, is deeply troubled by the treatment of her Jewish neighbors. She joins the underground helping Jews escape the country. Fated to meet and united by ideals, the two fall in love. André continues to fight alongside the guerrilleros, but now he and Gretchen must also elude the pursuit of authorities and Gretchen's controlling German husband. From Andorra to Pamplona to Atienza—battles, hideouts and traitorous ambushes lead to a final, fateful showdown at a guerrillero camp high in the Pyrenees.
