More about the book

Originally published in 1867, this book and its extensive illustrations provide a fascinating insight into the operations of the then recently invented steamship. Although all types of steam engines are covered, the emphasis was on ships, and the book covers both theory and practice -- construction of boilers, high-pressure engines, and construction of several different types of steamers. American Engineer magazine, reviewing the book at the time of publication, said: "A most excellent work for the young engineer and general reader. Many facts relating to the management of the boiler and engine are set forth with a simplicity of language and perfection of detail that bring the subject home to the reader."
