Having survived the horrors of the Holocaust as a hidden child in Nazi-occupied France, the 19-year-old Jeruchim immigrates to America with his two siblings to live with relatives in Brooklyn. There he adjusts quickly to a new culture, a new language, a new family, and the search for a new job. He does find a good job in graphic design, and he does learn English and adapt to his new family life. He also finds a girl to love. But all of this new life is shattered when he is drafted into the U.s. Army to serve on the front lines of the Korean War. He survives the war and returns to America, ready to embark on an adult life with a good career and a committed marriage.
