More about the book

The subphylum Clitellata within the phylum Annelida encompasses various classes of organisms found in freshwater environments. Ongoing discussions regarding the systematic concepts of these groups exist at all taxonomic levels. The goal is to enhance understanding of the interrelationships among systematic entities as more precise data on morphology, anatomy, and genetics emerge. This volume compiles valid taxa described from the western Palaearctic region, including the Egyptian Nile fauna, providing a foundation for future research. It addresses three classes of leeches: Branchiobdellida, which are epizoons on freshwater decapods; Acanthobdellea, specialized parasites of freshwater fishes; and Hirudinea, commonly referred to as "classical" leeches. Standardized morphological descriptions of all species are included, supplemented by anatomical details for accurate identification. Many species are illustrated, some for the first time. The keys provided cover all taxa within the specified geographical range and are designed for field biologists, facilitating quick identification of unknown species without dissection. Additionally, information on biology, ecology, and distribution is included, though users are cautioned about the potential for misinterpretation of these data.
