More about the book
Karl May's most popular work, Winnetou is the story of a young Apache chief told by his white friend and bloodbrother Old Shatterhand. The action takes place about a century ago in the American Southwest, where the Indian way of life is threatened by the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Winnetou, the only Native American chief who could have united the various quarreling tribes and reached an equitable settlement with the whites is murdered by some gold-seeking thugs. His tragic death foreshadows the death of his people.
