More about the book

Andri, the central character of Max Frisch's play, is the illegitimate son of the Lehrer of Andorra , who chooses to pass him off as a Jew whom he saved as a child from the neighbouring 'Blacks'. Andri's fellow citizens project their preconceived ideas of what a Jew is like onto him until he comes to accept the. Finally, he is the victim of the Jewish Inspection held by the Blacks' invading Soldiers. Andorra is a play in twelve 'pictures'. There is no sub-plot and the action in each of these 'pictures' is cumulative. Between each scene one of the characters protests his innocence to an imaginary court. By thus being made aware of the outcome of the play before the end we are forced to pass judgement upon the relative guilt of every character. Andora was written between 1958 and 1961. Max Frisch's other works include Biedermann und die Brandstifter and Die chinesische Mauer .
