This is a sturdy field guide to all the birds found on mainland New Zealand, with the Chathams and subantarctic islands omitted. The main section contains more than 360 colour photographs, with common, scientific and Maori names, plus information about habitat, distribution, physical characteristics, voice, food and breeding habits. There is a short section on bird watching equipment, a glossary and a short bibliography. There are indexes to common names and to scientific names, but not one for Maori names. Moon is already the author of eight books, most of which are about New Zealand birds.
