Sledujeme příběh dvojice mladých lidí, původně průzkumníků z asteroidu Gateway, později vyslanců lidstva mezi rasou Heechee. Zatímco ve vnějším vesmíru uplynou desetitisíce let, v jádru černé díry se během jednoho roku mnohem blíže seznámí nejen se zástupci rasy Heechee, ale odvrátí také hrozbu pro rasu Heechee i celý vesmír.
