Robert Southey

    August 12, 1774 – March 21, 1843

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, recognized as one of the "Lake Poets" and a poet laureate. His verse maintains enduring popularity, though his fame is often overshadowed by his contemporaries and friends William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Southey was also a prolific literary scholar, historian, and biographer, delving into the lives and works of many notable figures, including Horatio Nelson, whose biography has rarely been out of print since its publication. Furthermore, he was a respected Portuguese and Spanish scholar, and perhaps his most lasting contribution to literature is the immortal children's classic, The Story of the Three Bears, the original Goldilocks tale.
