Recent years have been tough on optimists. Hopes that the Internet might bring people together have been crushed by the ills of social media. Is there a way back? Chris Anderson, the head of TED, believes that we can turn outrage back into optimism. It all comes down to reimagining one of the most fundamental human virtues- generosity. What if generosity could become infectious generosity? Consider- . how a London barber began offering haircuts to people experiencing homelessness - and catalysed a movement . how two anonymous donors gave $10,000 each to 200 strangers and discovered that most recipients wanted to 'pay it forward' with their own generous acts . how TED itself transformed from a niche annual summit into a global beacon of ideas by giving away talks online, allowing millions access to free learning In telling these inspiring stories, Anderson offers a playbook for how to embark on our own generous acts - whether gifts of money, time, talent, connection, or kindness - and to prime them, thanks to the Internet, to have self-replicating, world-changing impacts.

Christopher Anderson (*1970, Kelowna, Canada), a member of Magnum Photos, is one of the most influential contemporary photographers. He first gained recognition in 1999 when he boarded a small boat with 44 Haitian immigrants trying to sail to America. The boat sank in the Caribbean. For his images, he received the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Since then, Anderson’s work has defied categorization as he slips between the worlds of documentary, art, commercial and fashion photography. He was New York Magazine’s first ever “Photographer in Residence” and won the World Press Photo contest in 2007 and 2008. The images in Bleu Blanc Rouge , taken in the United States, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, include portraits, candid moments, and still lifes. Recurring visual elements as the color red, forms and patterns, or a certain light tie the images together to a playful and poetic series. Presented in a magazine-like style, the particular intimacy of Anderson’s images enchants the viewer in an instant. Exhibition: 3.11.–8.12.2018, Ravestijn Gallery, Amsterdam

On finding joy and spiritual meaning in life's small moments We all have moments of joy, moments that move us somehow, spiritual moments that we can't quite put a finger on. But then we rush on and soon forget. In this book Chris Anderson encourages us to remember and share such moments. What he writes will inspire readers who are hurting, doubting, or searching to find wisdom and meaning in their lives. Drawing on an ancient prayer tradition, the examen of conscience, Anderson spurs readers to take stock of their own experiences. He shows how the examen can serve as a simple but powerful way to remember moments of light, of struggle, of joy. And however small or fleeting these moments are, through them God is always calling and meeting us.
