David Ross Brower was a leading environmentalist and the founder of numerous environmental organizations. In his youth, he was a notable mountaineer. He established the Sierra Club Foundation, the John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, Friends of the Earth, the League of Conservation Voters, the Earth Island Institute, the North Cascades Conservation Council, and the Fate of the Earth Conferences. Serving as the first Executive Director of the Sierra Club from 1952 to 1969, he also sat on its board three times. His activism and visionary approach left an indelible mark on environmental conservation.
