Roman Signer hat in seinem unverkennbaren Werk die Vorstellung von Skulptur entscheidend erweitert. Seine Aktionen machten ihn zu einem der bekanntesten Schweizer Gegenwartskünstler. Weniger bekannt sind seine «Reisefotos». Sie entstehen ohne Plan und halten Situationen und Ereignisse fest, auf die der Künstler mehr oder weniger zufällig tritt. Die von den Kräften der Natur geformten Gebilde oder von fremder Hand geschaffene Konstellationen erinnern immer wieder an Signers eigene Objekte. The chalky time is over! Peter Zimmermann, a prominent figure in conceptual painting, presents his first major exhibition in Freiburg. He has transformed the museum into a massive, integrated work of art, with the floor serving as a canvas and vibrant colors extending across multiple rooms. The exhibition and accompanying catalog highlight an epoxy floor piece created specifically for this event, alongside a new series of oil paintings unveiled in full for the first time. Since the mid-1980s, Zimmermann has explored painting's potential, manipulating documents like photos and diagrams with digital filters, layering them with epoxy resin to produce visually striking abstract forms. The title "Freiburg School" nods to the early 20th-century girls' school for which the museum was originally built, while also reflecting the artist's critique of current educational models and communication methods. Zimmermann examines the evolution of knowledge dissemination, from traditional encyclopedias to modern crowdsourcing platforms like Wikipedia. This book presents photos taken by Roman Signer on a 2005 journey through the Carpathian Mountains, which took him to the Ukraine and Romania. The photos evidence brief stops at the side of the road and present subjects that fall into two distinct categories: home-grown fruits, vegetables and other produce for sale, carefully displayed on stools or small tables; and loving memorials of flowers, crosses and wreaths for deceased family members and friends who were road casualties. The similarity between each composition - the landscape format, the colourful centred arrangement, the consistent distance between photographer and subject - belies a deeper message: the produce suggests sustenance, growth and plenty; while the memorials are signs of tragedy and grief. Karpaten / Carpathians is thus not only a collection of travel photos, but a reflection of the human need to shape events, and a succinct story of life and death - both realities along the metaphorical road on which we all travel.
Die Entwicklung des dokumentarischen Films auch in Deutschland folgte weitgehend internationalen Genrekonventionen, zu deren Entwicklung er in technischer und ästhetischer Hinsicht beigetragen hat. Seit den 20er-Jahren gab es einen regen internationalen Austausch zwischen den Filmemachern. Der Dokumentarfilm stellte das Experimentierfeld für eine neue visuelle Ästhetik dar - ein Triumph der Bilder. Von entscheidender Bedeutung war die innovative Arbeit mit der Kamera. In dieser Periode wurden Zeitlupe und Zeitraffer ebenso entwickelt wie Mikro- und Makroaufnahmen bis hin zur Röntgenkinematographie, die sogar einen Blick ins Innere von Tier und Mensch ermöglichte. Von kaum geringerer Bedeutung war der moderne Schnitt, der sich unter anderem an russischen Vorbildern orientierte und den Bildern Rhythmus und Dynamik verleihen sollte.
