      The phraseological view of language

      • 324 pages
      • 12 hours of reading

This volume presents the results of the international symposium Chunks in Corpus Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, held at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg to honour John Sinclair's contribution to the development of linguistics in the second half of the twentieth century. The main theme of the book, highlighting important aspects of Sinclair's work, is the idiomatic character of language with a focus on chunks (in the sense of prefabricated items) as extended units of meaning. To pay tribute to Sinclair's enormous impact on research in this field, the volume contains two contributions which deal explicitly with his work, including material from unpublished manuscripts. Beyond that, the articles cover different aspects of chunks ranging from more theoretically-oriented to more applied papers, in which foreign language teaching and the computational application of the insights about the nature of language provided by corpus research play an important role. The volume demonstrates the wide applicability and relevance of the notion of chunks by bringing together research from different fields of linguistics such as theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and foreign language teaching, and thus provides an interdisciplinary view on the impact of idiomaticity in language.

A Coursebook for Students of English

      3.8(12)Add rating

The book introduces the reader to the central areas of English linguistics. The main sections are: the English language and linguistics - sounds - meaning-carrying units - sentences: models of grammar - meaning - utterances - variation. Notably, the book is written from a foreign student's perspective of the English language, i. e. aspects relevant to foreign language teaching receive particular attention. A great deal of emphasis is put on the insights to be gained from the analysis of corpora, especially with respect to the idiomatic character of language (idiom principle, valency approach). In addition, the text offers basic facts about the history of the language and elaborates on the differences between British and American English. The author demonstrates that a linguistic fact can usually be described in more than one way. To this end, each section contains a chapter written for beginners providing a broad outline and introducing the basic terminology. The remaining chapters in each section highlight linguistic facts in more detail and give an idea of how particular theories account for them. The book can be used both from the first semester onwards and as perfect study aid for final B. A.-examinations.

Aus dem Inhalt: Preliminary remarks about syntactic analysis - The syntactic framework - Word classes - Phrases - Clauses - Valency - The meaning of sentences - An analytical framework

      Valency

      Theoretical, Descriptive and Cognitive Issues

      • 394 pages
      • 14 hours of reading

Recent research on valency has yielded significant insights into language, with many findings presented for the first time in this volume, focusing primarily on English and German. It includes examples of contrastive analysis beneficial for professionals working with these languages. The psycholinguistic and computational linguistics sections illustrate the applicability of valency theory, highlighting the collaboration between theoretical and descriptive linguistics and applied disciplines. The papers address several aspects of valency analysis: (i) theoretical connections to related theories of complementation, such as dependency syntax and FrameNet; (ii) descriptive elements of valency and complementation; (iii) valency's role in describing cognitive processes in syntactic processing; (iv) contrastive aspects, particularly between English and German; and (v) potential computational applications in areas like automatic syntactic recognition and language processing. This volume features contributions from various linguistic schools, aiming to demonstrate how concepts developed for one language, often German, can be effectively applied to others, such as English.

      A valency dictionary of English

      • 961 pages
      • 34 hours of reading

This dictionary provides a valency description of English verbs, nouns and adjectives. Each entry contains a comprehensive list of the complementation patterns identified on the basis of the largest corpus of English available at the present time. All examples are taken directly from the COBUILD/Birmingham corpus. The valency description comprises statements about the quantitative valency of the lexical units established, an inventory of their obligatory, contextually optional and purely optional complements as well as systematic information on the semantic and collocational properties of the complements. An outline of the model of valency theory used in this dictionary is provided in the introduction.
