Portugalsko má v dnešní době zhruba stejný počet obyvatel jako Česko a jen o něco málo větší rozlohu. Přesto po staletí ovlivňovalo naše životy mnohem více než větší a mocnější země. Portugalci dali Angličanům nejen odpolední čaj, ale i Bombaj, klíč k jejich impériu. Do Afriky přinesli ochranu před malárií, do Ameriky otroky, do Indie vysokoškolské vzdělání či kari a samosu, do Japonska tempuru a střelné zbraně. A byli to, mimochodem, zase oni, Portugalci, kdo radili čínskému císaři dříve, než se do Číny dostal Marco Polo. Portugalci se svými loděmi propojovali svět dávno předtím, než ho začaly propojovat moderní technologie. Portugalci tak vytvořili první globální vesnici.

Dieser dritte Roman des Woody Allen der jungen französischen Literatur handelt vom Ende der Liebe, dem zweifelhaften Versuch, eine neue zu verhindern, von einer Karriere im freien Fall und der schlingernden Suche nach der eigenen Person. Geistreich, eigenwillig und poetisch erzählt Martin Page die kleinen, schrägen oder auch tragischen Geschichten seiner Figuren. Ein fein beobachteter, sehr pariserischer Roman über den Wunsch nach dem wirklichen Leben.

Le sourire de Fio s'apprivoisait du regard, il n'apparaissait que sous certains grains d'une lumière rare, dans le voile d'une demi-obscurité, dans ces moments qui ne vivent dans aucune seconde et dans les yeux de ceux qui disent leurs derniers mots. Ses lèvres minces et pâles comme celles d'un horizon anémique tranchaient avec ses cheveux roux ; elles bougeaient peu, même quand Fio parlait ; mais le sourire était toujours là, bien présent. Il devenait éclatant si on en avait l'intuition, il était sublime pour ceux qui avaient l'imagination de le voir ainsi dans ce visage banal. On n'aurait su dire si son sourire était le point de départ ou d'arrivée de l'ironie qui rayonnait de Fio. C'était une ironie douce comme un couteau dont la lame serait un pétale de rose. Si les morts étaient capables de sourire, ils souriraient ainsi.

Să devii ceva mai prost poate fi o idee inteligentă. Să gândești mult este, în lumea de azi, un handicap ca oricare altul. Cel puțin așa crede Antoine, un tânăr de 25 de ani, care suferă de boala gânditului și se simte foarte bătrân. Drept urmare, își pune toată inteligența la bătaie ca să intre și el în categoria reconfortantă a imbecililor fericiți. Într-o acțiune alertă, plină de surprize, veți afla câte neajunsuri aduce inteligența, la ce e bună prostia și, mai ales, cum poți s-o dobândești. Cartea oferă satisfacții intelectuale atât oamenilor inteligenți, cât și fericiților cărora experimentul lui Antoine le-a reușit deja.

Ignorance is bliss, or so hopes Antoine, the lead character in Martin Page's stinging satire, How I Became Stupid—a modern day Candide with a Darwin Award like sensibility. A twenty-five-year-old Aramaic scholar, Antoine has had it with being brilliant and deeply self-aware in today's culture. So tortured is he by the depth of his perception and understanding of himself and the world around him that he vows to denounce his intelligence by any means necessary in order to become "stupid" enough to be a happy, functioning member of society. What follows is a dark and hilarious odyssey as Antoine tries everything from alcoholism to stock-trading in order to lighten the burden of his brain on his soul.
