Novelist Bohumil Hrabal (1914–97) was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia and spent decades working at a variety of laboring jobs before turning to writing in his late forties. From that point, he quickly made his mark on the Czech literary scene; by his death he was ranked with Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Capek, and Milan Kundera as among the nation’s greatest twentieth-century writers. Known for writing about political questions with humor and vivid expressiveness, Hrabal also was given to experimentation—his early novel Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age , for example, consists of a single extended sentence.Pirouettes on a Postage Stamp carried Hrabal’s experimentation to the field of autobiography. On its surface a verbatim record of an oral interview conducted by Hungarian journalist László Szigeti, the book confuses and confounds with false starts, digressions, and philosophical asides. The Gentle Barbarian is Bohumil Hrabal's homage to Vladim r Boudn k, one of the greatest Czech visual artists of the 1950s and 1960s, whose life came to a tragic end shortly after the Soviet invasion of 1968. Boudnik and Hrabal had a close and often contentious friendship. For a brief period, in the early 1950s, they both worked in the steel works in Kladno and lived in the same building in Prague. Written in the early seventies, Hrabal's anecdotal portrait of Boudnik includes another controversial member of that early group of the Czech avant-garde: the poet Egon Bondy. While Hrabal and Bondy were evolving their aesthetic of "total realism," Boudnik developed his own artistic approach that he called "Explosionalism," in which the boundaries between life and art become blurred, and everyday events take on the appearance and the substance of art. Hrabal's portrait of Boudnik captures the strange atmosphere of a time in which the traditional values and structures of everyday life in Czechoslovakia were being radically dismantled by the Communists. But as The Gentle Barbarian demonstrates, creative spirits are able to reject, ignore, or burrow beneath the superficial "revolutionary" atmosphere of the time, and find humor, inspiration, and a kind of salvation amidst its general intellectual and creative poverty.

TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE is a tender and funny story of Hant'a - a man who has lived in a Czech police state - for 35 years, working as compactor of wastepaper and books. In the process of compacting, he has acquired an education so unwitting he can't quite tell which of his thoughts are his own and which come from his books. He has rescued many from jaws of hydraulic press and now his house is filled to the rooftops. Destroyer of the written word, he is also its perpetuator. But when a new automatic press makes his job redundant there's only one thing he can do - go down with his ship. This is an eccentric romp celebrating the indestructability- against censorship, political opression etc - of the written word.

In Schöntrauer, dem 2. Teil seiner Trilogie Das Städtchen am Wasser (Die Schur, st 1613; Schöntrauer, st 1614; Harlekins Millionen, st 1615), erzählt Bohumil Hrabal nun aus der Perspektive des neugierigen Heranwachsenden die kleinen und burlesken Begebenheiten aus dem Heimatstädtchen Nymburk. Er entdeckt die an Absonderlichkeiten reiche Welt der Erwachsenen, ihre Schrullen und Launen, die die drohende Gefahr des Zweiten Weltkriegs unwirklich erscheinen läßt. Dem Alltäglichen und Banalen entlockt Hrabal die Poesie und verwandelt durch seine Imagination die Erinnerungen in ein humoreskes Spiel mit Phantasie und Erlebtem.

In einer Altpapiersammelstelle versammelt Hrabal Bücher, die vergessen oder zensiert sind. Er zeigt, dass die Wahrheit nur in der Kunst zu finden ist und kombiniert Komik mit melancholischer Skepsis. Der Text ist eine Hommage an Franz Kafka und reflektiert Hrabal's einzigartigen Erzählstil.

Wer ich bin: Antwort: "Ich hatte immer den Vorteil, keine echte Bildung und kein echtes Wissen zu haben, so setzte ich alles auf das Erlebnis. Meine Bildung wurde aber nie umgeschmolzen, sie konnte sich nie qualitativ verwandeln, nie einen Sprung anderswohin machen, und dies aus dem einfachen Grund, weil ich immer etwas beknackt war. První stránky Hrabalovy autobiografické trilogie Svatby v domě, Vita nuova a Proluky spatřily světlo světa koncem sedmdesátých let dvacátého století, tedy v době, kdy spisovatel až na výjimky nesměl ve své vlasti oficiálně publikovat (ve stejné době mimochodem vznikala další Hrabalova vrcholná díla Něžný barbar a Příliš hlučná samota). Prvního vydání se tedy všechny tři knihy dočkaly v zahraničí. Přesto se jedná o jedny z nejlepších Hrabalových próz. Celá trilogie obsahuje sumu spisovatelových životních zkušeností a vydává jasné svědectví o jeho originálním umění.

W swoim pisarstwie stworzył galerię niezwykłych postaci, w których on sam wydaje się odbijać niczym w zwierciadle. Czyż bowiem spod rozgadania stryjka Pepiego, szaleństwa czułego barbarzyńcy Boudnika lub niedojrzałości kelnera Jana Dziecięcia nie wyziera twarz samego Hrabala? Hrabal B, wie Dr. jur. Bohumil Hrabal als briefeschreibender Autor zu unterzeichnen pflegte, wurde 1914 im mährischen Brünn geboren, wuchs aber im böhmischen Nymburg, einem Elbestädtchen auf. In dessen Nähe liegt die Waldortschaft Kersko, wo Hrabal B, seit seiner Studienzeit »Prager«, ein kleines Wochenendhaus hatte. Dieses recht bohemehaft eingerichtete Häuschen war immer dann seine Zuflucht, wenn der Besucherstrom in seiner Prager Wohnung unerträglich wurde. Allerdings ereichten die Besucher den tschechischen Schriftsteller mit der größten in- und ausländischen Lesergemeinde auch dort. Und vor schierer Verzweiflung hierüber retteten ihn wohl nur zwei Umstände: Seine Schlaflosigkeit - wenigstens nachts konnter er an seiner altertümlichen Schreibmaschine sitzen - und das Abschildern der Leute und Geschehnisse im waldeinsamen Kersko. Für fünfzehn Erzählungen mit hundert Begebenheiten und tausend Erstaunlichkeiten bildet das Waldstädtchen den unsichtbaren Rahmen. An Bewohnern hat es allem Anschein nach keine ›Bürger‹, sondern ausschließlich ›Originale‹.

Bohumil Hrabal wurde am 28. März 1914 im tschechischen Brünn (Brno) geboren und starb am 3. Februar 1997 in Prag. 1935 begann Hrabal sein Jurastudium in Prag. Nebenbei besuchte er Vorlesungen über Literatur, Kunst und Philosophie und schrieb seine ersten Gedichte. 1939 musste er sein Studium unterbrechen, da die deutsche Besatzungsmacht die tschechischen Hochschulen schließen ließ. Von 1941 bis 1945 arbeitete er für die staatliche Eisenbahn. 1946 promovierte er zum Dr. jur. Von 1947 bis 1949 war er Handelsreisender. In dieser Zeit bereitete er seinen ersten Gedichtband Verlorenes Gäßchen vor. Bis 1958 arbeitete Hrabal in einem Stahlwerk in Kladno und in einer Altpapierpackerei in Prag. 1956 heiratete er Eliska Plevová. 1963 erschien seine erste Erzählung Perlchen auf dem Grund erscheint; rasch folgten von 1964-68 Die Bafler, Tanzstunden für Erwachsene und Fortgeschrittene, Inserat. verkaufe Haus, in dem ich nicht mehr wohnen will, Moritaten und Legenden und andere Texte, die zum Teil auch verfilmt wurden. Bis 1975 wurde ein Publikationsverbot verhängt. Eine Auswahl seiner Texte konnte jedoch im Ausland, darunter in der DDR und in der Bundesrepublik erscheinen. Von 1982 bis 1985 entstand die autobiographische Trilogie Hochzeiten im Haus . 1987 starb seine Ehefrau. Noch vor der politischen Wende erschien 1988 der autobiographische Mädchenroman in Canada in einem Exilverlag.

Bohumil Hrabal erinnert sich an Kindertage und Verwandte, an Wirtshäuser und Schulen, und hier vor allem an seine Nymburker Schulzeit, wo er, voll des Schabernacks, sogar das Abitur übersteht - als einziger unter seinen Mitschülern im Smoking - und am Ende der Abiturfeier den Smoking los wird, um, befreit von solchem Zwang, "ohne" das Leben eines Bohemien zu beginnen.

Książka Antologia czeskiego eseju ma na celu zaprezentowanie polskiemu Czytelnikowi czeskiej myśli, kultury, sztuki i literatury. Znalazły się tu utwory należące do klasyki eseju, publikowane w Polsce od końca lat siedemdziesiątych głównie w drugim obiegu i na emigracji. Tematyka eseistyki jest bardzo szeroka: od esejów emigracyjnych do polemik ideowych, od nurtu katolickiego po protestancki. Koncepce nového souboru Hrabalových textů vychází ze skutečnosti, že jeho Sebrané spisy (SSBH) jsou již k dispozici, a to v podobě 19 svazků, jež vydala Pražská imaginace v letech 1992–1997. Nová řada tyto Sebrané spisy nenahrazuje, ale textologicky z nich čerpá a odvolává se na ně. Jejím cílem je předložit hrabalovský „kánon“, základní a reprezentativní podobu autorova literárního odkazu a jeho recepce.

Je rozděleno do sedmi částí, které se navzájem prolínají, tak jako celé geniální renčínovské dílo. Dlabáček a jeho nerozlučný přítel, žena Marie, příroda, vesmír a samozřejmě všudypřítomný Bůh s trojúhelníkem nad hlavou se celá léta vinou naší národní minulostí i přítomností. Jsou humorným svědectvím o různých dobách a jejich proměnách, ale především o nás samotných; skutečnými dějinami národa českého, moravského a slezského.

Kniha povídek doprovázená fotografiemi Jindřicha Štreita - fotografa ze Sovince. Kniha obsahuje povídky jako Setkání, Hostina, Pábitelé atd.

Třetí svazek Hrabalova díla obsahuje autorovy nejznámější novely, tedy Taneční hodiny pro starší a pokročilé, Ostře sledované vlaky, Postřižiny, Městečko, kde se zastavil čas, Něžný barbar, Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále a Příliš hlučná samota. Koncepce nového souboru Hrabalových textů vychází ze skutečnosti, že jeho Sebrané spisy (SSBH) jsou již k dispozici, a to v podobě 19 svazků, jež vydala Pražská imaginace v letech 1992–1997. Nová řada tyto Sebrané spisy nenahrazuje, ale textologicky z nich čerpá a odvolává se na ně. Jejím cílem je předložit hrabalovský „kánon“, základní a reprezentativní podobu autorova literárního odkazu a jeho recepce.

Dílo Bohumila Hrabala (1914—1997) je dnes uznávané nejen jako jedna z dominant české prózy druhé poloviny dvacátého století, ale je známé i v evropském a světovém kontextu. Přední znalec Hrabalova díla Milan Jankovič vybral pro Českou knižnici soubor kratších autorových próz z celého rozsahu jeho prozaické tvorby od počátku padesátých let až po léta devadesátá. Těžiště svazku však spočívá v povídkách a črtách z let padesátých a šedesátých. Téměř půl století po proslulém Automatu Svět (1966) s doslovem Emanuela Frynty a kolážemi Jiřího Koláře tak vznikl další orientující výbor z Hrabalova díla, přinášející jeho živé a hodnotné kratší texty

Anekdoty a mikropovídky o rodině Nohýlovic charakterizují periferní činžákovou kulturu, hovorový jazyk, ze kterého čerpá jeho původní tvorba.

Šestý svazek Sebraných spisů Bohumila Hrabala obsahuje tři větší prózy napsané v první polovině 70. let: Postřižiny (z r. 1970), Městečko, kde se zastavil čas (z března 1973) a Něžný barbar (z podzimu 1973). Všechny tři práce postihl v době jejich vzniku zákaz publikování, Postřižiny vyšly až v r. 1976, Městečko autor zcela převyprávěl a jednotlivé motivy nalezneme v Krasosmutnění (1979) a Harlekýnových milionech (1981), které jsou obsahem 10. svazku Spisů. Spolu s dalšími dvěma svazky zahrnuje tato kniha tvorbu autorova vrcholného tvůrčího období. I zde je dodržena celková koncepce Spisů, všechny texty jsou publikovány v nejpůvodnějších zachovaných variantách. K vydání připravila a ediční poznámky napsala Jiřina Zumrová. Přebal a vazbu navrhl a graficky upravil Milan Albich.

Sbírka lyriky obsahuje básně s tématem Mozartova vztahu k Praze z let 1940–1954.

Pátý svazek Sebraných spisů obsahuje texty publikované v letech 1964-1970 a spolu s předchozím svazkem dává úplný přehled o prvním publikačním období autora. Obsahuje- Taneční hodiny pro starší a pokročilé Inzerát na dům, ve kterém už nechci bydlet Toto město je ve společné péči obyvatel Morytáty a legendy Etudy. K vydání připravili Karel Dostál, Claudio Poeta a Václav Kadlec. Přebal, vazba a grafická úprava Milan Albich.

Fotografická publikace Františka Dostála - ukazuje, že každý člověk města je individualitou, lidé se potkávají, míjí, vznikají situace nenadálé, život města Prahy a jeho lidí ve fotografiích... Devět cyklů o Praze, každý předznamenaný fotografií lucerny, obsahuje fotografie jak dávné (např. rok 1968), tak i zcela nové.

Spisovatel a doktor práv Bohumil Hrabal prošel řadou profesí: byl skladníkem, výpravčím, pojišťovacím agentem, dělníkem v hutích, baličem starého papíru. Myšlení autora spojovaného s živelným vypravěčstvím a hospodskou historkou mělo ovšem i duchovní rozměr. To, co pozorní čtenáři dosud jen tušili, potvrdil nedávný nález nahrávek Hrabalových adventních promluv na faře v Libici nad Cidlinou. Už jako sedmdesátník v nich Hrabal nejen odhaluje vzácnou citlivost k posvátnému rozměru života, ale vykládá své odmítnutí právnické kariéry a příklon k lidem na dně jako svou cestu „malého krista“. Pavel Hošek je profesorem religionistiky na Evangelické teologické fakultě UK. Soustavně se věnuje duchovnímu rozměru krásné literatury, mj. v díle Jaroslava Foglara, E. T. Setona, J. R. R. Tolkiena či C. S. Lewise.

Šestý svazek komentovaných spisů Bohumila Hrabala obsahuje příležitostné texty, poznámky, předmluvy a doslovy, úvodní slova k výstavám a rozhovory psané a poskytované průběžně a publikované v údobích, kdy se jméno Bohumil Hrabal smělo objevit v tisku. První pokus seznámit čtenáře se svou publicistikou učinil autor ve svazku Domácí úkoly (Úvahy a rozhovory), připraveném v roce 1969 pro Mladou frontu. Vysazený text byl tehdy skartován a zachovala se jen část nákladu, zcizená cestou do Sběrných surovin. Druhým pokusem byly Domácí úkoly z pilnosti, jež už vyšly, ale v redakčně silně upravené podobě. V našem vydání jsou oba soubory otištěny v původní, necenzurované verzi. Doplňuje je výběr z ostatní publicistiky, nadepsaný Poletující obrazy. Svazek je Hrabalovým výmluvným intelektuálním autoportrétem, který jednak ilustruje šíři jeho zájmů – od jazyka a literatury přes výtvarné umění k filozofickým otázkám – a jednak přináší nejvýznamnější komentáře k jeho vlastní tvorbě. Není to jen doplněk Hrabalova beletristického díla, ale jeho plnohodnotná součást.
