Venuše a Adonis či Znásilnění Lukrécie) a díly spornými a apokryfními, a to vše v překladu jediného člověka, předního českého anglisty a shakespearologa Martina Hilského.
Čtvrtá a poslední část publikace přináší portrétní galerii lidí a osobností Shakespearovy doby.

Obraz Alexandrie a jejích obyvatel autor láme a tříští do různých odrazových ploch „heraldického světa“.

One of the most thought-provoking and vivid essayists of the twentieth century, George Orwell fought the injustices of his time with singular vigor through pen and paper. In this selection of essays, he ranges from reflections on his boyhood schooling and the profession of writing to his views on the Spanish Civil War and British imperialism. The pieces collected here include the relatively unfamiliar and the more celebrated, making it an ideal compilation for both new and dedicated readers of Orwell's work. -- Publisher's website.

Of man's first disobedience, and the fruit Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste Brought death into the world... Sing heavenly muse' From almost the moment of its first publication in 1667, Paradise Lost was considered a classic. It is difficult now to appreciate both how audacious an undertaking it represents, and how astonishing its immediate and continued success was. Over the course of twelve books Milton wrote an epic poem that would 'justify the ways of God to men', a mission that required a complex drama whose source is both historical and deeply personal. The struggle for ascendancy between God and Satan is played out across hell, heaven, and earth but the consequences of the Fall are all too humanly tragic - pride, ambition, and aspiration the motivating forces. In this new edition derived from their acclaimed Oxford Authors text, Stephen Orgel and Jonathan Goldberg discuss the complexity of Milton's poem in a new introduction, and on-page notes explainits language and allusions.

The French Lieutenant's Woman is a 1969 postmodern historical fiction novel by John Fowles. It was his third published novel, after The Collector (1963) and The Magus (1965). The novel explores the fraught relationship of gentleman and amateur naturalist Charles Smithson and Sarah Woodruff, the former governess and independent woman with whom he falls in love. The novel builds on Fowles' authority in Victorian literature, both following and critiquing many of the conventions of period novels. Following publication, the library magazine American Libraries, described the novel as one of the “Notable Books of 1969”. Subsequent to its initial popularity, publishers produced numerous editions and translated the novel into many languages; soon after the initial publication, the novel was also treated extensively by scholars.
Jednotlivé eseje, „střípky rozbitého zrcadla“, ovšem neusilují o systematický přehled americké a britské literatury, ale reflektují proměny života a kultury v Americe a Británii dvacátého století v několika vybraných uzlových bodech. Aniž by to tituly esejů zjevně deklarovaly, dozví se čtenář jaksi mimochodem o chicagské bohémě, jižanském agrárním hnutí, sanfranciské renesanci, beat generation, hippies, londýnské avantgardě počátku dvacátého století, imagismu, vorticismu a impresionismu, o skupině Bloomsbury či o hlavních tendencích britské literatury druhé poloviny dvacátého století.

Othello

In a period of ten years, Shakespeare wrote a series of tragedies that established him, by universal consent, in the front rank of the worlds dramatists. Critics have praised either Hamlet or King Lear as the greatest of these; Ernst Honigmann, in the most significant edition of the play for a generation, asks: why not Othello? The third of the mature tragedies, it contains, as Honigmann persuasively demonstrates, perhaps the best plot, two of Shakespeares most original characters, the most powerful scene in any of the plays and poetry second to none. Honigmanns cogent and closely argued introduction outlines the reasons both for a reluctance to recognize the greatness of Othello and for the case against the play. This edition sheds new light on the text of the play as we have come to know it, and on our knowledge of its early history. Honigmann examines the major critical issues, the play in performance and the relationship between reading it and seeing it. He also explores topics such as its date, sources and the conundrum of double time. 'Honigmann's extensive knowledge illuminates this play at every turn, making this the best edition of Othello now available.' Brian Vickers, Review of English Studies
Shakespearova sváteční komedie o lásce, intrikách a lžích, příběh plný překvapení, milostných zvratů, důvtipných pletich i zákeřných pomluv. Mnoho povyku pro nic (Much Ado About Nothing) napsal Shakespeare koncem roku 1598 nebo počátkem roku 1599.
Tradition holds that Shakespeare wrote the comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor at the request of Queen Elizabeth, who was fond of the character Falstaff and wanted to see him in love on stage. However, Shakespeare cleverly subverts this expectation, as Falstaff is not in love with the two Windsor wives but rather with their husbands' money. His plan to acquire this wealth ultimately fails, and in the comedic conclusion of the play, he is ritually punished and ridiculed in Windsor Park. The Merry Wives of Windsor is unique as Shakespeare's only comedy set in England and his only middle-class comedy. It captivates with its bursts of linguistic wit, as each character possesses a distinct and individual speech. The Welsh priest Hugo Evans distorts English with his accent and comically twisted phrases, while Dr. Caius, a Frenchman, mangles English with his French pronunciation and idioms. Mistress Quickly speaks in her own unique manner, and of course, Sir John Falstaff stands out as one of Shakespeare's greatest comedic characters.

Hamlet

Perhaps the most influential work of English drama, this timeless tragedy explores conflicted loyalties, madness, betrayal, and revenge. In this Penguin Shakespeare edition, edited by T.J.B. Spencer and introduced by Alan Sinfield, the story unfolds in Denmark, where young prince Hamlet encounters his father's ghost. He learns that his uncle, King Claudius, murdered his father and is tasked with avenging his death. As Hamlet grapples with his conscience, he pretends to be mad while devising a brutal plan for revenge, which alienates his mother, Queen Gertrude, and his lover, Ophelia. However, his feigned insanity brings him dangerously close to real madness, causing chaos for both the guilty and innocent. The edition includes a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and Elizabethan theatre, a specific introduction to the play, a chronology, reading suggestions, an essay by Paul Prescott on performance options, and a commentary. William Shakespeare, born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, wrote approximately 38 plays and 154 sonnets, many of which are considered exceptional works of drama and poetry. If you enjoyed this tragedy, you might also like Shakespeare's Macbeth, available in Penguin Shakespeare.

Often regarded as one of the more difficult of Shakespeare's plays to categorize, "Timon of Athens" eclectically contains elements of comedy in its satire as well as components of tragedy in Timon's allegorical downfall and death. The play depicts Timon as an enormously wealthy man who gives away his possessions to a large number of false friends. When he himself is in need, all of them turn their backs on him, and the result is Timon's savage embitterment and raging seclusion. Considered one of Shakespeare's more challenging works, it is now largely believed to be due to Thomas Middleton's collaborative writing. A worthy play of Shakespeare's canon, "Timon of Athens" is compelling to this day in its intense and unrelenting position on greed and corruption in society.
Set in the vibrant world of ancient Rome during Julius Caesar's time, this classic novel by Thornton Wilder explores the complexities of power, ambition, and the human experience. The narrative vividly captures the political intrigue and cultural richness of the era, offering a timeless reflection on the nature of leadership and society. The new introduction by Jeremy McCarter adds contemporary insight, connecting the historical themes to modern audiences.

Farrell introduces us gradually to a large cast of characters as he paints a vivid portrait of the Victorians' daily routines that are accompanied by heat, boredom, class-consciousness and the pursuit of genteel pastimes intended for cooler climates. Even the siege begins slowly, with disquieting news of massacres in cities far away. When Krishnapur itself is finally attacked, the Europeans withdraw inside the grounds of the Residency where very soon conditions begin to deteriorate: food and water run out, disease is rampant, people begin to go a little mad. Soon the very proper British are reduced to eating insects and consorting across class lines. Farrell's descriptions of life inside the Residency are simultaneously horrifying and blackly humorous.

"Coriolanus is perhaps the most brilliant political play ever written. Set in Ancient Rome, it remains a gripping psychological study of the relationship between personality and politics. The introduction to this new edition considers Shakespeare's adaptation of his historical material (Plutarch's Lives) in relation to the social and political conditions in London and Stratford at the time of the play's composition, also offering new evidence that it was written in 1608. Professor Parker examines the play's history and particularly its staging at the Blackfriars theatre, where it was probably the first of Shakespeare's plays to be presented and for which it may have been written. A thorough commentary pays special attention to the needs of actors and directors."--Publisher description

In this striking tragedy of political conflict, Shakespeare turns to the ancient Roman world and to the famous assassination of Julius Caesar by his republican opponents. The play is one of tumultuous rivalry, of prophetic warnings--"Beware the ides of March"--and of moving public oratory "Friends, Romans, countrymen!" Ironies abound and most of all for Brutus, whose fate it is to learn that his idealistic motives for joining the conspiracy against a would-be dictator are not enough to sustain the movement once Caesar is dead.

Vyšlo v rámci edice Souborné dílo Williama Shakespeara v překladu Martina Hilského, v souboru s dalšími třemi svazky: Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, Dva páni z Verony.

The Tempest

Performed variously as escapist fantasy, celebratory fiction, and political allegory, The Tempest is one of the plays in which Shakespeare's genius as a poetic dramatist found its fullest expression. Significantly, it was placed first when published in the First Folio of 1623, and is now generally seen as the playwright's most penetrating statement about his art. Stephen Orgel's wide-ranging introduction examines changing attitudes to The Tempest, and reassesses the evidence behind the various readings. He focuses on key characters and their roles and relationships, as well as on the dramatic, historical, and political context, finding the play to be both more open and more historically determined than traditional views have allowed.

"Steinbeck is an artists; and he tells the stories of these lovable thieves and adulterers with a gentle and poetic purity of heart and of prose." —New York Herald Tribune A Penguin Classic Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend, John Steinbeck created a “Camelot” on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey, California, and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny, whose house, like Arthur’s castle, becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude. As Nobel Prize winner Steinbeck chronicles their deeds—their multiple lovers, their wonderful brawls, their Rabelaisian wine-drinking—he spins a tale as compelling and ultimately as touched by sorrow as the famous legends of the Round Table, which inspired him. This edition features an introduction by Thomas Fensch. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
"Seen by Lawrence as his most accomplished book, but subject to the initial prudery and incomprehension that met most of his fiction, Women in Love examines the regenerative and destructive aspects of human passion, as illustrated by its depiction of Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen - who first appeared in The Rainbow - and their relationships with Gerald Crich and Rupert Birkin. Set against the backdrop of a world consuming itself in war, the novel creates an instructive vision of humanity's dance with life and death." "This text is the famous "first" Women in Love, the unexpurgated version preferred by Lawrence himself, which was rejected by every publisher because of the banning of The Rainbow in 1915. More positive in tone than the revised version published in his lifetime, with different central relationships and a radically different ending, it is now viewed by many as Lawrence's masterpiece."--BOOK JACKET.

Sdílí s nimi rodinné téma a závěrečný motiv odpuštění, usmíření a znovunalezené harmonie.

1919: After surviving the Great War, Major Brendan Archer makes his way to Ireland, hoping to discover whether he is indeed betrothed to Angela Spencer, whose Anglo-Irish family owns the once-aptly-named Majestic Hotel in Kilnalough. But his fiancée is strangely altered and her family's fortunes have suffered a spectacular decline. The hotel's hundreds of rooms are disintegrating on a grand scale; its few remaining guests thrive on rumors and games of whist; herds of cats have taken over the Imperial Bar and the upper stories; bamboo shoots threaten the foundations; and piglets frolic in the squash court. Meanwhile, the Major is captivated by the beautiful and bitter Sarah Devlin. As housekeeping disasters force him from room to room, outside the order of the British Empire also totters: there is unrest in the East, and in Ireland itself the mounting violence of "the troubles." Troubles is a hilarious and heartbreaking work by a modern master of the historical novel.

This work is a classic Renaissance tale, taken largely from Boccaccio's Decameron, and concerns unrequited love, love renounced and love triumphant. It contains a fully developed sub-plot, concerning the worthless braggart Parolles, which is comically inventive.

Jedno z posledních her Williama Shakespeara, řazená mezi tzv. romantické hry. Dílo Cymbelin nepostrádá typickou dramatičnost, zápletky a nedorozumění, vedoucí hlavní postavy k často neuváženým rozhodnutím, málem zapříčiňujícím tragédii, závěr hry však přejímá harmonie nastolená nečekanými vysvětleními a usmířením....

Vyšlo v rámci edice Souborné dílo Williama Shakespeara v překladu Martina Hilského, v souboru s dalšími třemi dramaty: Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, Troilus a Kressida.
